Giant Church Incorporated
Giant Church Incorporated is a toxic, destructive system that glorifies power and image. It's not about the size of the church, or necessarily a church at all. It's the way a church, college, Christian organization, or political system operates. The institution is valued over the people in it. I was part of Giant Church Inc and want to tell my story.
Why tell the story? If Giant Church Inc is making a positive difference in their city, if hundreds are baptized each year, if the seats are filled and the people are singing worship songs and listening to teaching they understand, then why does it matter?
Because thousands of people attend Giant Church Inc. The way they think about God, Jesus, others, the Bible, and their worldview is shaped by it. If Giant Church is not telling the truth about who God is, who Jesus is……if they aren’t preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then thousands of people live from lies instead of the truth.
When Narcissism Comes To Church: A Book Review
In 2017, my family and I left the church we loved and served for eight years. We weren’t prepared for the whirlwind of emotions we felt afterward. We were simultaneously confused, relieved, angry, fearful, sad, and lost. In an effort to understand what happened to me and my family, I researched, read stories, and listened…
What Now, Giant Church Inc?
My friend wanted to see my face when I explained why we left Giant Church Inc. Why our youngest daughter quit the internship when she’d worked so hard. Why I quit the leadership program so close to graduation and why I couldn’t finish teaching the small group we were in together. It didn’t make sense…
Giant Church Inc Resources All In One Place
It took three years to write this series. Not three years of actual writing, but that long to understand what happened to me and my family at Giant Church Inc, process it, pray through it, then gather the gumption to write it down. Giant Church Inc changed us forever. This series tells part of that…
I Pledge Allegiance to Giant Church Inc
I stood there in the door of the ER room after a nurse led me to it, and reintroduced myself before I walked in. On the way to the hospital, I imagined it to be as awkward as it turned out to be. This woman, in a new town far from all she knew, in…
I Still Believe After Giant Church Inc
A painful truth about spiritual abuse is that it most often happens in community. While not all the people in the faith community are abusers, when the community chooses willful blindness or silence after it is exposed, another betrayal takes place. Healing from spiritual abuse also happens in community. This guest post is written by…
Say Something Giant Church Inc
This one is different. The story I mean. She didn’t say most of what she could, but what she did say is powerful. And true. The tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21) and Jesus said the truth shall set you free (John 8:32). Say Something by Glenn Mitchell I thought long…
We See You, Giant Church Inc
More leaders, experts, and journalists are finding out about the toxic leadership and spiritual abuse happening within the Church, and they’re writing about it. This kind of behavior from the very ones who are called to shepherd God’s people “counters the gospel and fights the very character of Jesus himself,” writes Scot McKnight in an…
Sign Here at Giant Church Inc
As a little girl, I stood in line with the church people to shake hands with new members of our Baptist church. To join, they walked to the front, talked to the pastor, then the people in the pews voted them in. All the old church people lined up to welcome the new ones. I…
Redeeming Power
It took three years to learn about and understand what happened to me and my family at the church we left in 2017. Dr. Diane Langberg and her work helped give me the language to tell our story of spiritual abuse. Through her lectures, articles, and podcast interviews, for the first time in my life,…
